Union Township Fire Station - glaserworks - Personally Completed Design • 2003
Along with the Partner-in-Charge, I met with Township Trustees, Fire Department leadership and personnel to finalize the program and establish the adjacencies required and how the station would be used. We also toured the existing warehouse building and discussed possible modifications with a structural engineer as well as the overall site requirements.
I documented the building and the site in AutoCAD. I then studied the program further and developed a design approach based upon interior flow and bringing daylight to the common corridors and the apparatus bay. In eight hours I completed a schematic layout of all required interior spaces. I next developed a schematic approach for the site plan, and I then refined those schematic concepts and competed the drafting of the plans as well as the sections and elevations.
We presented this design to the Township and Fire Department, and it was unanimously approved. My very efficient circulation system focused on rapid response times, and it also meant there was a small amount of additional area in the building that could be used for non-programmed purposes. This was also appreciated by the client as this would be their main fire station and additional needs would likely arise.
The design along with the sturctural and mechanical reports as well as the cost estimates were bound into an 11x17 book. The project was contengent upon acquiring the property as well as passing a new property tax. The tax was not approved.
